Before joining That '70s Show as laid-back teenager Hyde,
Danny Masterson appeared on such shows as Roseanne, NYPD
Blue and Cybill. Danny is the older brother of Chris
Masterson, who plays Francis on Malcolm in the Middle.
FOXcom_Host: Welcome to Danny Masterson and to all
your FOX.com fans!
Danny_Masterson: Hello, chatters! Prepare
for doom!
Emmie: Is your real personality
anything like Hyde's on the show????
Danny_Masterson: No, not especially.
He is kind of a drag and much more sarcastic than I am.
I am a lot more energetic than he is. And I trust most everybody
-- he trusts no one. Danny_Masterson: But we look a lot alike!
dantheman: Would you watch this show if you weren't on it? Do you watch it now?
Danny_Masterson: Yeah, I watch the show
all the time. I have never really watched any other shows I have
done. That '70s Show makes me laugh really hard. Danny_Masterson: I am surprised at how funny even I think it is.
stitches: Are you a fan of the 70s? Retro style and all that.
Danny_Masterson: Sort of. I like open-collared
shirts. No bell bottoms. I like sideburns. Not a big fan of disco,
but a big fan of '70s rock 'n' roll. Danny_Masterson: I would say I am a fan, but not as big
a fan as others.
mrjay: Danny, are those sideburns real?
Danny_Masterson: Yeah -- been growing
them since I was 18.
dantheman: Who's the best actor on the show? Who's the most fun to work with?
Danny_Masterson: I would say the
best actor on the show is Kurtwood Smith -- although everyone
is fantastic. He is my favorite to work with because you
never know what to expect.
alexandra865: Who is the funniest person behind the scenes?
Danny_Masterson: I would say Fez -- Wilmer.
He has got a good dirty sense of humor. Very similar to mine.
He also has great characters that he does. He performs for us
constantly. Danny_Masterson: He can single-handedly get the entire
stage rolling. Danny_Masterson: During the Halloween episode where Fez
wore a skin-tight Batman costume, he basically humped everyone's
leg on the entire set for the entire week. Like a horny dog!
juicer:Iis everyone as funny
off set as they are on set?
Danny_Masterson: No. We have the best writers
in television giving us their best material. We are just a bunch
of normal average adults who aren't comics.
stitches: What actor or actress would you most like to act opposite?
Danny_Masterson: Sean Penn. Danny_Masterson: Best actor I have ever seen perform.
State of Grace, Hurly Burly, Sweet and
Lowdown, Carlito's Way, Dead Man Walking
-- no one can touch what he can do.
dantheman: Who is your TV idol? Who is your favorite movie actor?
Danny_Masterson: Garry Shandling
-- best show ever put on television. Danny_Masterson: And Sean Penn.
mrjay: Danny, is it true you started
your TV career at age 5?
Danny_Masterson: I started my commercial
career at 5 and started doing TV when I was about 12 doing guest-starring
roles. My first series regular part was Joe's Life for
ABC when I was 16.
Nina: Who inspired you to go into the acting field?
Danny_Masterson: No one, really, it just
seemed like a natural thing to do. Danny_Masterson: Seemed like second nature, I guess.
Stitches: Do you do, or did you
do, a lot of theater?
Danny_Masterson: No, I did one play
for two months at the City Center Theater in New York when
I was 9.
dannyfan: What is the best and worst thing about acting?
Danny_Masterson: The best thing is when you nail a performance,
the feeling that you have is indescribable. It's addicting, like
a drug. The worse thing is you sometimes get caught up in your
characters; you have to remember what is real and what's not.
Stitches: What types of film roles
are you most interested in? Any favorite genre?
Danny_Masterson: I like the acting genre
of films -- movies that have a lot of dialogue and not a lot of
flash. Hurly Burly, which was a play, and Your Friends
and Neighbors come to mind. I like movies with lots of dialogue.
dantheman: I know you've been in
some movies -- has there ever been any star that you worked
with that made you starstruck?
Danny_Masterson: John Travolta made me
star-struck but also made me very comfortable very quickly. He
couldn't have been a nicer person. In terms of super-stardom,
he takes the cake.
juniper: Are there any parts that you have not gotten that still stick out in your mind?
Danny_Masterson: Yeah, but I would rather
not say. Danny_Masterson: They're too painful to think about.
I spend many a night crying over those lost roles...just
kidding!
Emmie: Are you going to be in a movie soon???
Danny_Masterson: I have a movie coming
out in December called Dracula 2000 and a movie for
VH1 called Back in Black coming out this year. And
an indie film called Sex and a Girl.
SunnFyre: Are you brothers with
the guy who plays "Francis" on Malcolm in the Middle?
Danny_Masterson: Yes, that's my younger
brother Chris. We are 4 years apart.
groovygrrl: I am a huge fan of That
'70s Show and your brother's show Malcolm in the
Middle, do you come from an acting family?
Danny_Masterson: Well, we are in the same
family and we both act. My little brother Jordan, who is 13, did
an episode of That '70s show and he has done a movie of
the week. And my sister Alana was on Young and the Restless
a few years ago. And my younger brother Will does not act, he
just rules at all sports.
dannyfan: Danny---I know that your
brother is on Malcolm in the Middle--are you competitive?
Danny_Masterson: No.
Canadian_girl: Do you go visit your
brother's set and vice versa?
Danny_Masterson: He comes over here to
my set because he goes out and lives with Laura, who plays Donna.
So he is over here a lot. Danny_Masterson: I haven't been over there, but only because
of lack of time .
sugar_magnolia: Do you really have a crush on "Donna" or anyone else on the set?
Danny_Masterson: No, I have a crush on
my girlfriend, Krissy, who I have lived with for four years.
Juniper: Do you only work in comedy,
or would you like working in more dramatic roles?
Danny_Masterson: No, drama is actually
much easier for me, and I think I do a better job with dramatic
roles. Comedy is about timing and I guess I got lucky and was
born with some -- which I am very happy for. Danny_Masterson: I think that drama is more fun.
groovygrrl: If you were stranded
on a desert island, what record or book would you wish you
had?
Danny_Masterson: The record would be Pearl
Jam's 10 and the book would be Ham on Rye by Charles
Bukowski.
dannyfan: Krissy is sooooo lucky!
Breonnaf: Well I am happy for you....
are there wedding bells in the future?
Danny_Masterson: Next question....
sugar_magnolia: Does your girlfriend act as well?
Danny_Masterson: Yes, she just did
the season opener of Spin City.
Stoner: Bukowski is great! do you admire that sort of rough outrageous person?
Danny_Masterson: I don't know if I admire
an alcoholic, but I do appreciate his honesty, his humor and his
storytelling. Danny_Masterson: Also, the fact that he is so easy to read
and natural -- I admire those qualities in him more than his faults.
LadyL: How old are you?
Danny_Masterson: I am 24.
Emerlea: How have you changed since the show began to now?
Danny_Masterson: Besides my bank
account, not at all. Danny_Masterson: I still do the same stuff, have
the same friends, listen to the same music, go see the same
movies .
breonnaf: Did you finish high school?
Danny_Masterson: No, I didn't. I went to
school until 10th grade and then had a tutor on set.
Emerlea: How did you do in school?
Did you get good grades, or were you a goof-off?
Danny_Masterson: I would say I was a B
student. If I studied hard I would get a good grade, but if I
slacked off I would get an average grade. I didn't blow too many
tests.
Nina: Have you ever contemplated college?
Danny_Masterson: I enrolled in the Pasadena
Art Center and made it to only three classes just because work
was so plentiful. After that experience, which was three or four
years ago, I never contemplated going back.
Daniel_S: If you some day went into another profession what would it be?
Danny_Masterson: I don't even know, it would take me
too long to think of something good.
groovygrrl: Working with Roseanne is rumored to be difficult, did you find that to be true?
Danny_Masterson: No, I didn't find it difficult.
I would call it a challenge. Frankly, I am glad I had the opportunity
to work with her.
Mandyjay919: have you ever thought about writing scripts for the show?
Danny_Masterson: I have not. I do not posses
that talent. I wish I did. I am not much of a writer. I usually
think too fast to get it down. I will stick to the acting. Ashton
is a good writer, though. Sometimes he pitches ideas to the writers
and sometimes they get on.
Hola: What went through your head
when you found out you got the audition -- or made it rather
-- as a character on the show?
Danny_Masterson: Financial security. Danny_Masterson: That's about it.
Breonnaf: What is the one characteristic
that you bring to the show that no one else does?
Danny_Masterson: I don't know that no one
else brings this, but you will never get a false moment from Hyde.
There is no slapstick or cheating, no overdoing something for
a studio laugh. I try to make him as real as possible and I try
to respect that.
Kelly: Danny, do you still have
to go on a lot of auditions now that you're more recognized
from That 70's Show?
Danny_Masterson: Well, I don't have a lot
of time for auditions, but for feature films, definitely. The
things I get offered I usually don't want to be in. They're usually
teenage-aimed genre films -- which I enjoy watching, but not acting
in. Danny_Masterson: So I still audition for most things.
Pollychr0me: Are you as cool and
collected as your character Hyde on That 70's Show?
Danny_Masterson: Yeah.
stoner: Do you think the show has
a more realistic view of kids than most shows?
Danny_Masterson: Yeah, I do. I think you
get to see how mature kids are -- or immature sometimes -- as
opposed to just one or the other.
Danny_Masterson: I don't really see
a difference between kid problems and adult problems.
SunnFyre: Were any of your friends
growing up like the people you're friends with in That
70's Show's cast?
Danny_Masterson: No. Danny_Masterson: I don't know anybody in the world like
anyone on the show. I knew kids like Hyde, but that's about it.
misty: Are you as politically radical
as your character is on the show?
Danny_Masterson: No, I am not.
Jeannie: What is your favorite episode
of That 70s Show?
sugar_magnolia: What has been your favorite episode?
Danny_Masterson: I think the disco episode
in the middle of Season 1. Bonnie and Terry Turner wrote it. It
had a lot of subtleties to it. I don't think it was the funniest,
but I think it was the best.
Breonnaf: I enjoy "special
brownies", do you?
Danny_Masterson: I do not enjoy "special
brownies."
Juicer: was it fun taping the special
brownie episode? It was hilarious!
Danny_Masterson: Yeah, it was really fun.
It was our season opener. I especially liked it because I had
a lot to do -- which is always a plus because we have 12 characters
on the show. But I actually enjoy all the shows. And no, I don't
eat or smoke anything "special."
stitches: Do you think the show encourages pot use?
Danny_Masterson: I hope not. Danny_Masterson: I am not sure sometimes. Danny_Masterson: What makes it OK for me is that we are
portraying a time when there was less awareness of the long and
short-term effects of different vices. Danny_Masterson: The mid-'70s were a lot different than
the year 2000.
mrjay: Do you have any vices?
Danny_Masterson: Too many sports.
I am always sore -- my legs are always killing me because
I do not stretch enough.
Emmie: Was there ever a scene that made you feel uncomfortable?
Danny_Masterson: No, nothing really makes
me uncomfortable. Nothing in terms of acting, especially because
it is all a character. It is portraying someone else, so for me
it is easy. I can make that character uncomfortable, but not me
BigWolf5: Danny, what happens to you on the season premiere of the show?
Danny_Masterson: Watch it and find out, sucka!
takeeone: Will your character ever get to mess around with Donna?
Danny_Masterson: No. Danny_Masterson: That happened for about three seconds
the first season and we are way beyond that. Danny_Masterson: She is not slutty enough for Hyde.
Nina: Are they going to finally give Hyde a girlfriend on the show?
Danny_Masterson: I am not sure. Danny_Masterson: I don't really ask. I have had a few one-episode
ladies, but I think keeping him single gives the writers more
options for the character. Danny_Masterson: Although a fling with someone might
be fun!
Mandyjay919: Is there anything special we can look for this season?
Danny_Masterson: Fez comes out of the closet,
Midge and Hyde hook up, Donna and Jackie hook up, Eric comes out
of the closet and Red becomes a hippie. Danny_Masterson: Kitty gets into dominatrix and it all
happens in the first episode, so MAKE SURE you watch!
voodoochild: Tell us the secret
to your hair.
Danny_Masterson: Leave-in conditioner.
breonnaf: Can you hook me up with a pair of those glasses?
Danny_Masterson: No... Danny_Masterson: ...but you can probably find some at K-mart.
Mandyjay919: Any changes in the
script or new characters to be added?
Danny_Masterson: I guess the changes I
have already mentioned and new characters...Jackie has a kid and
so does Laurie...they both have Kelso's children.
mrjay: Do you think you might get
typecast from the popularity of this show?
Danny_Masterson: Typecast as a realistic,
mellow character? I hope so! Danny_Masterson: Hyde can be funny, mad, goofy, cool, romantic,
so I wouldn't mind getting typecast as an all-around good character!
starla73: On the show you guys are
really funny. Is any of that ad libbing or is it all from
the writers?
Danny_Masterson: Everything is from the
writers. We have ad-libbed maybe one line in three years. We just
have great off-the-cuff writers. Danny_Masterson: The only ad-libbing are the curse words
when we mess up our lines.
neocortex: What is your most prized
possession?
Danny_Masterson: My genitalia.
Danny_Masterson: Bye, everybody, thanks
for the chat. Lovely to meet you all! We hope we make you laugh
-- it is what we try to do. Cheers!
