Born in England, raised in Australia, Gordon Elliot just might be the original international man of mystery! This affable entertainer is a popular talk show and game show host around the world.
FOX.com Host: Did you know that Mr. Elliott left law school to pursue a career in media? FOX.com Host: And that was twenty years ago! FOX.com Host: Wonder if he'll go back to get that degree... FOX.com Host: Hearing his voice, it's no surprise that Gordon got his start in radio... FOX.com Host: He even sat in for Casey Kasem's Top 40 back in the late 70's! FOX.com Host: So based on his accent, can anyone guess where Mr. Elliott is from?
MikeDaddy: Australia?
FOX.com Host: MikeDaddy, you are correct! FOX.com Host: Our guest, Gordon Elliott, should be here in about ten minutes... FOX.com Host: And we are hoping to have a special guest join us along with Gordon during the time he chats with us. FOX.com Host: Rumor has it, there was a huge winner on "Chance", who might pop his head in for a bit and let us know how it feels! FOX.com Host: Our guest has arrived!
FOX.com Host: Let's welcome the fantastic Gordon Elliott!
Gordon Elliot: I hope everybody enjoyed the show this evening! Gordon Elliot: I'm at home in upstate NY with my family, watching a bearded woman on Fox!!
foxy1: Do you prefer having your own talk show or is hosting a show less pressure?
Gordon Elliot: Well, it's a lot less pressure...a lot easier..a lot nicer to be in a position to transfer so much wealth so quickly to people who really deserve it, great people.
langtreelil: How did you land your role as host on Chance?
Gordon Elliot: I was called by Fox just two weeks ago. I was actually in Sydney Australia, doing a special on Australian food for the Olympics. that will be seen on the Food Channel Gordon Elliot: I was in the middle of filming and I got a call, asking me to do the show. Gordon Elliot: They had already built the set, booked the guests, the last thing they needed was the host. I'll never find out who said no before me.
bradley549:What was your first game show you hosted?
Gordon Elliot: To Tell the Truth, for ABC, 10 years ago. It was one of the best experiences I ever had in television. I was very disappointed when I couldn't go ahead with that series. Gordon Elliot: In fact, when I was doing my talk show I used to lock the door in my office and watch "The Price is Right" instead of my own show. Gordon Elliot: I just naturally have fun with people and I have a very trivial mind! so I guess I have the two qualifications a game show host needs.
oolala: Who was the most interesting contestant?
Gordon Elliot: It would probably be on To Tell the Truth.... Gordon Elliot: we had some pretty fascinating people. Gordon Elliot: we had a guy who actually they made a movie about. he was the Toxic Avenger..and he actually destroyed his health by doing what he did. Gordon Elliot: He would hide out in deeply polluted industrial areas, catching major corporations destroying the lakes, rivers, wetlands, with photographic and statistical evidence. Gordon Elliot: but in doing so he destroyed his health...be he probably did more than any non-government individual to change legislation in this country. He died very early, an unfortunate death. Gordon Elliot: and he called himself The Toxic Avenger, like some sort of superhero.
gmoney: where are you from originally?
Gordon Elliot: born in Liverpool England, but I grew up in Sydney Australia. now I live in NY. Gordon Elliot: so between my Australian passport, my British passport, and my US green card, i can be simultaneously unemployed in 3 countries.
foxy1:Gordon, heard you hosted an Australian talk show. Would you ever move back to Australia?
Gordon Elliot: one day i hope to retire there, with my family. But that's many years from now Gordon Elliot: we spend 6 weeks a year there during Christmas, for Australians, that's our summer holiday.
langtreelil:Do you think Americans have a fascination with Australian fellas? Mel Gibson and now Russel Crowe?
Gordon Elliot: I'm just delighted and proud to have Australian individuals that have the kind of talent and drive to enable them to succeed in the most competitive environment in the world... Gordon Elliot: when I see those people it inspires many people..that despite the enormous odds to do well against the enormous competition.
BloodyW:Is television your only passion? What else do you enjoy doing?
Gordon Elliot: My other passion is my family. I love my little boys and my wife enormously.... Gordon Elliot: I also produce other series. when I'm not, I'm at home with the family. They're very young, 4 and 2, they're at the stage, where you could just put them on toast. Gordon Elliot: I've raced motorcars, spent a lot of time traveling, diving, skiing, all sorts of other crazy activities. but I care most about my kids.
bradley549: Gordon, are you going to attend a world series game this year?
Gordon Elliot: Only if I can get the tickets, if you are offering!
bradley549:
Who do you think will win the world series this year?
Gordon Elliot: I live in NY, I drive through the Bronx every day... Gordon Elliot: If I said anything other than the Yankees, my tires would be taken off.
Spyder:How do you like hosting a big gameshow on FOX compared to hosting "Doorknock Dinners" on the Food Network?
Gordon Elliot: They are two completely different animals. I love Door Knock Dinners, because it allows me to just do whatever I want, based on the people I meet... Gordon Elliot: and it's such a strange and unusual kind of TV, it's very satisfying piece of silliness. Gordon Elliot: Being a part of the production on Chance of a Lifetime is one of the most exciting things I've ever done as a TV broadcaster. Gordon Elliot: It's a wonderful team of professionals. the guy who does the lighting lights the Emmies, the Tonys, anything you've seen in a major award ceremony that looks glamorous is his work. Gordon Elliot: The producer is responsible for some of the biggest shows on TV, including the Macy's Day Parade...I love just listening to them putting the show together. Gordon Elliot: In the words of Ed Sullivan, it's a really big big show. I just cross my arms and try not to get into trouble.
oolala:Who was the greatest success story on your show?
Gordon Elliot: Timothy who will be joining us in a moment. Gordon Elliot: we gave away close to 2 million dollars in these five shows this week... Gordon Elliot: more than half of it was taken by Tim.
gmoney:What do you feel about the new game show culture?
Gordon Elliot: It's better than extreme violence and outrageous bad behavior. Gordon Elliot: I think it reflects what people feel they need right now..and it's a reassuring familiar format. Gordon Elliot: that a lot of families are watching, as they did, the parents did, when they were growing up. I think that a lot of the recent events that have shaken people's feelings about community and living in America today have given television yet another role to play and that is something of a comfort. Gordon Elliot: shows that simply entertain and offer "dreams come true" Gordon Elliot: It's 50s programming with a 90s gloss.
oolala: DId you feel that you were given a magical break or did you start at the bottom?
Gordon Elliot: I started a little below the bottom. Gordon Elliot: I started in a place called Perth, western Australia, professionally. My first radio gig, just to get from Perth to Sydney was a huge leap. Gordon Elliot: I've been broadcasting for 24 years, in radio and television. And I have ridden ups and downs, and currently I believe I'm enjoying an upward cycle. Gordon Elliot: but as Noel Coward once said Success is defined by how you handle failure. Gordon Elliot: failure can be the most important part.
FOX.com Host: Our special guest will be joining us here shortly... FOX.com Host: It's the big winner of Chance of a Lifetime...
newfie:Hosting It's Chance of a Lifetime, do you consider yourself famous and looked up to (a role model)? Or is it all the same to you?
Gordon Elliot: No, it's not all the same. It's a terrific honor to be asked to do a show like this. Gordon Elliot: I'm not joking when I say I'm just a game show concierge. Tim and all the people on the show are the stars. Gordon Elliot: It's important not to get too much of a profile. You don't want to bore people, they see you every night. Gordon Elliot: it's the contestants that people tune in to watch.
RAwFighter: What where you thinking just before you told that guy he won a million?
Gordon Elliot: Is there any way I could screw around with it before I told him he won. It was too delicious a moment not to play with.
Voltanis:For the million dollar winner, what was going through your mind as Gordon told you you won?
Timothy Hsieh: it was something that I had been thinking about as a possibility ever since the game shows came on the air, but the reality took a while to sink in - I compared it to someone who prepares for a big event like a wedding that is going to happen at some point but then it happens and you aren't sure how anything has changed and it takes some getting used to having all this extra money
Voltanis:How do you keep your composure so well when you're about to hand out over a million dollars to someone?
Gordon Elliot: the moment isn't about me. Gordon Elliot: It's instinctive at that point that you hand over the award and get off the stage. Gordon Elliot: just like the academy awards. I'm the woman in the frock, standing in the shadows. It's Tim's moment.
agent05x:Tim, are you going to quit your job now that you're a millionaire?
Timothy Hsieh: haha - I have way too many responsibilities in my job to consider quitting - it would be nice to take an extended break but I don't think my patients would stand for it. I still enjoy practicing medicine very much - the money I won will help me enjoy my time outside of work a great deal more
oolala: what debt did you get rid of?
Timothy Hsieh: I had $2000 dollars on my credit card for travel I was going to do in the future and I had bought some home entertainment equipment
TomT:Great show tonight, Gordon! First time I watched. My wife says you look great! Must have lost some weight since the last time we saw you. Fun show.
Gordon Elliot: well, running after two little boys is a good way to shed pounds. Gordon Elliot: and thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
gmoney:Timothy....Dio you remember the million dollar question?
Timothy Hsieh: yes, I do remember the question
Gordon Elliot: you'll never forget it!
MysSciFiFan:Can you tell me what the million-dollar question was on tonight's show? I was outside and didn't see the end of the show.
Timothy Hsieh: the question was to name the manager of the band on the TV show the partridge family
Britney:How did you feel when you knew it was Ruben Kinkaid?
Timothy Hsieh: I felt great knowing it was something that all the years I spent in front of the TV as a kid was worth something - I double checked my options and it was good to see it come up right at the top of my choices Timothy Hsieh: I don't even remember what the other two choices were
MillionaireLover: so tim, have people started to treat you any different?
Timothy Hsieh: well, most p I simply wanted to give them the thrill of watching the show - I told them the show was worth watching but not how much I had actually won - most people on the west coast haven't seen it yet, and I think they will enjoy it more when they find out if I win the million dollars or not
Nfriend: Tim, how are you accepting the "fame" of winning? What was your reaction when they asked you to do this live chat?
Timothy Hsieh: we'll see what type of fame occurs Timothy Hsieh: I have no idea what widespread reaction will occur - when asked to do the chat I agreed very easily because I wanted to promote the show - I think the show is very good with many twists that appeal to game show fans and if it is successful who knows? Maybe they'll have a champions round later
newfie: Timothy, may I say, you ARE a gameshow prodigy, you just flew through those questions.
Timothy Hsieh:well, when you're lucky enough to encounter questions that fit with what you've picked up over the years I figured it would be best not to waste enough time Timothy Hsieh: I was lucky that I had the second chances still available at the end so I could use them when I ran into a question I wasn't sure of
Grammy418: Gorden how does it feel to help make peoples dreams come true????
Gordon Elliot: It's wonderful. Gordon Elliot: There are very few people in the world who can give away a million dollars. Gordon Elliot: And I'm delighted to have that weird and wonderful opportunity. Gordon Elliot: I think of the pleasure in spending the Fox network's money.
Lisa: Tim, did you think that the questions were easy or hard ?
Gordon Elliot: It depends on your background.
Timothy Hsieh: the producers have the saying they are easy till you run into the one you don't know
araickdem: Did you ever think when you were chosen that you would actually become a millionaire?
Timothy Hsieh: you always go into the game thinking about that possibility just like when you buy a lottery ticker you don't think you won't get all the numbers Timothy Hsieh: but I thought I would have as much of a chance as anybody to win
geolip: What was your 1st thought when you won the milllion, Tim?
Timothy Hsieh: excitement and relief that the building pressure during the game was finally over and you probably saw I really wasn't saying a whole lot just smiling as big as I could
grammy418: Tim, what are you plans tonight? You have to go and celebrate!!! and do it well!!!!! You deserve it.
Timothy Hsieh: well, I actually just came back from work and I haven't seen the show yet here on the west coast so after that I'm probably going to be answering a lot of phone calls and emails from people who have seen the show tonight Timothy Hsieh: I do have a bottle of champagne in the refrigerator
newfie: timothy, are you going to buy a moneyvault full of pennies and swim in it? Or do you have higher plans?
Timothy Hsieh: definitely higher plans! Timothy Hsieh: probably thinking about a down payment for a house
Dr_Nick: So Tim, you said you were going to use it for a downpayment. I guess you can pay for a house in cash now if you want, huh?
Timothy Hsieh:that's one possibility but I need to discuss that with my accountant regarding the tax implications
Nfriend: Tim, do you have any plans of trying out for other "Big Money" game shows?
Timothy Hsieh: I certainly hope they are still around in one year when I become eligible for them again Timothy Hsieh: it wouldn't hurt to try but I have that length of time to set aside for thoughts about playing again
araickdem: Tim, what would you do if you were approached to do publicity, like commercials or something?
Timothy Hsieh:I would have to see if it would interfere with my day job which keeps me very busy Timothy Hsieh: I wouldn't mind doing that sort of thing but I have a big responsibility to my patients and I don't want it to cause problems for them
duffman76: I am from Michigan, are you going to have a parade when you get back? Since you did win the most money in a game show--EVER!
Timothy Hsieh:my parents would probably love to throw one for me but I just don't imagine that happening
Jessie: How tall is Gordon?
Timothy Hsieh: Gordon is huuuuuge!
Gordon Elliot: (laughs)
Timothy Hsieh:I think about 6 foot 6 or 6 foot 7
Gordon Elliot: I'm 6 foot 7. Gordon Elliot: we were the same size sitting down.
momofour: Well Goodnight from Momofour, Tim you did a great job and we are so happy you won! Gordon, Love you as host, We've watched Door Knock Dinner's for a long time! I rubbed my computer screen for good luck, I have never spoken to a millionaire before!!lol
Timothy Hsieh: thank you!
grammy418: Tim are you still in the clouds!!!!! lol I hope that this money brings you nothing but happiness!!!!!
Timothy Hsieh: I'm still in the clouds to a certain extent carrying on with my everyday life Timothy Hsieh: I'm thinking of the memories of winning gives me a lift whenever I come back to earth
niceguy76: hey tim if you could do it all over again, would you bet everything on every question
Timothy Hsieh: I still probably would hold a little in reserve for the later questions because you never can be certain you're not going to run into a gap in your knowledge Timothy Hsieh: it is true I could have won a couple of 100 thousand dollars more betting everything but I am certainly happy with the money that I did win
geolip: You had to have a lot of guts to bet that much money, Tim
chooch: Congradulations Tim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MysSciFiFan: Congratulations to TIM and all the other contestants
momofour: Congratulations Tim We are all very happy for you!! Good Going!!
Andrea: Nice going Tim - I think you had the whole family watching...
FOX.com Host: Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us tonight!
Timothy Hsieh:thank you everyone for your questions and your congratulations - I hope everyone continues to watch the show and cheers on everyone else and I hope some of you are able to get your chances of a lifetime as well
Gordon Elliot: I want to congratulate Tim.
grammy418: Tim you should be so proud of yourself. I was screaming when you won! My family thought i was crazy!!!!! They said you act like you know him!!!!!!!!
Gordon Elliot: and point out it's obvious the money he won will be used to help him focus on the important work he's doing. Gordon Elliot: because of that he has the guarantee of happiness that will far exceed the amount of money he could win on any game show.
Jessie: Congrats, Tim
koso: congratulations tim!
Gordon Elliot: Thanks Tim. I think they probably have big plans for you! See you soon.
FOX.com Host: Good-bye, tim!
koer: You are nicer than Regis Philbin, Greed guy, Jeprody Guy, and the Wheel of Fortune Guy combined!
Gordon Elliot: well, look out, because if I get your credit card bill in my hands...I'm going to look for all of the interesting secrets I can find. Gordon Elliot: It may change your opinion after that.
grammy418:Gorden are you still on? I just wanted to thank you for coming back to FOX. You are a really nice oerson, and deserve to be on a great show!!!
Gordon Elliot: That's very sweet. Thank you very much. It means a lot to know that people feel that.
gmoney: Gordon, how does your family feel about your work schedule?
Gordon Elliot: (laughs) I have a wonderful wife who before we were married worked in television before me. so she understands what I have to do and why I love doing it. Gordon Elliot: and I think she can see it's better to have a happy husband who's away a little more often than we would like than to have a seven day a week husband who's banging his head against the walls. Gordon Elliot: but seriously, I couldn't do what I do as comfortably if I didn't have support from my wife.
Jessie:Gordon, we all love you, are you planning to do any other shows?
Gordon Elliot: I think two shows like Door Knock Dinners, and Chance of a Lifetime, are enough for the moment. Gordon Elliot: the rest of my time I hope to spend enjoying the fun they offer me.
gmoney: Gordon...any competition issues with Regis?
Gordon Elliot:I don't think...he'll take it too badly! Gordon Elliot: (laughs)
geolip: Do you like any other shows on television, Gordon?
Gordon Elliot: I enjoy The Simpson's. I think it's the best written comedy on network TV. Gordon Elliot: now that Seinfeld has left. Gordon Elliot: it's also great to watch with the two kids because they enjoy the cartoons. And I enjoy the clever writing.
geolip: Gordon, I must say that you are an excellent host
duffman76: Its nice to see you joined us GORDON
Gordon Elliot: Thanks!
grammy418: Congrats Gorden for such a wonderful show. Im so glad your back on FOX.
Gordon Elliot: That's great. Thank you. It is as much of a chance of a lifetime for me as it is for the guests.
FOX.com Host: It's been great chatting with you - All the best to you!
Gordon Elliot:That's lovely. I'd say goodnight and I hope that I meet many of you on the site because we are looking for contestants to come on the show. And you don't have to push buttons faster than the speed of light to qualify! Gordon Elliot: just be ordinary folk like Tim.
marlatt: Gordon, I am planning a trip to CA & am looking forward to you paying off my credit card!!
