Chuck Wollery - June 9, 2000
As host of Love Connection and The Dating Game, Chuck managed to keep the peace and get the dirt. Then he thrived on Greed. How can you not love this guy?!

FOX.com Host: One of the most charming and enchanting personalities on TV will be joining us tonight!
FOX.com Host: Chuck has been a game show host forever, but did you know he also has some acting credits?
FOX.com Host: In fact, who knew that he actually made an appearance on "Melrose Place"? Actually twice!
FOX.com Host: Our very special guest is here now!!!
FOX.com Host: I'd like to welcome the very charming Chuck Woolery!

Chuck Woolery: It's nice to be known as charming! Welcome everybody to the Greed conference! You are part of a history-making online chat, the first online chat about Greed!
Chuck Woolery: I hope everyone out there at least feels the need!

chanceit:How long have you been on television?

Chuck Woolery: I started on television in 1993 or 1994--no, '75 or '76, January 6th, 1975, Wheel of Fortune.
Chuck Woolery: Which makes me what? About 25?
Chuck Woolery: And I'm still looking for a star on the Hollywood Boulevard, no one has recognized me yet!

chanceit:What is your favorite game show to watch? Do you watch your own game show?

Chuck Woolery: Greed is the only show that I have ever done that I watch consistently every Friday night. I have never every had a show that I was a part of that I watched with any kind of consistency at all.
Chuck Woolery: Part of that pressure, quite frankly, is put on me by my family. Because not only does my wife like to watch it, but my children won't miss an episode. It's very unusual for me and for people in my business. We don't normally look at everything we do.
Chuck Woolery: Unless it's for critical reasons, but I'm just past that.
Chuck Woolery: And on another note, to answer a question that wasn't asked yet, what have I liked best doing in my career?
Chuck Woolery: I've certainly enjoyed every show I've done immensely.
Chuck Woolery: But in all honesty, Greed is the favorite of all shows I've done, its the most interesting show, with the most dynamic and most drama, and naturally the most excitement of any show I've done.

herbie:Chuck...I've been a huge fan of yours since Wheel of Fortune and have enjoyed all the shows you hosted...Love Connection, Dating Game, Scrabble (which I was on with you as a contestant when the show came back on for its second run I think in '92)...anyways what has been your favorite show to host and how exactly did you get your start as a game show host with Wheel 25 years ago?

Chuck Woolery: As I said before, Greed has been so far my favorite to show to host, it's just so unusual. Plus it's a huge nighttime show, they've always been syndicated or daytime.
Chuck Woolery: When you get the aura of a nighttime show, and the power, it's just bigger than life. It's a very powerful experience.
Chuck Woolery: My start was from Merv Griffin on Wheel of Fortune. I had done his talk show as a singer.
Chuck Woolery: And at the end of the show he asked if I'd ever thought of doing a game show, which I took a little personally as a pretty bad critique of my singing.
Chuck Woolery: But I did try out for a show that he had, and of course, that was history for my musical career, and that was Wheel of Fortune.
Chuck Woolery: And that was such a gigantic hit...and of course most people don't even know I did that show, it's already been about 19 years...very sad!

Castle00:What was the best moment you've had as the host of Greed?

Chuck Woolery: You know we have given away to date $16.5 million since November! Can you imagine that!?
Chuck Woolery: That's an enormous amount of money--I don't think Millionaire can even come close...anyway, it's a lot of money.
Chuck Woolery: When you are giving away money like that, you have a lot of great times. There are some people I can remember....
Chuck Woolery: For example, Daniel Avila from San Diego literally stood alone while his teammates had $400,000 apiece, and he stood alone and risked his $200,000 for $2.2 million.
Chuck Woolery: And that was a very exciting time for me as a host of a game show. I think it was the first time in the history of a game show that someone had been asked, Would you like to risk your $200,000 for $2.2 million?
Chuck Woolery: Now the second time, later this year, recently in May, we had three people left on a team, they had risked $1 million for $2 million, they put that million on the line, they were going to lose it if they didn't get it right, and they won. So I had a team of three people win $2 million.
Chuck Woolery: Now when they won that, I asked the most ridiculous question that I have ever asked in my entire career:
Chuck Woolery: I turned to Phyllis Harris, the captain at the time, and I said Phyllis, with an absolute straight face, would you like to risk that $2 million for $4 million? The most ridiculous question I've asked in my career.
Chuck Woolery: Phyllis was very smart...she said no.
Chuck Woolery: So those were two of many fantastic moments I've had on the show...

jhuhn:I would like to see more of Super Greed. Can you do that before the series is over? Or if you can get syndication?

Chuck Woolery: What do you mean by "Can we do it before it's over"?
Chuck Woolery: I have a reason for asking that!

jhuhn:I mean your show is getting off FOX so I was asking.

Chuck Woolery: Let me set the record straight.
Chuck Woolery: For some unknown reason the impression has been left that we are going off the air, and I'm not sure who left that impression, but it's been left far and wide.
Chuck Woolery: The show has not been taken off the air, we just have not been mentioned through the fall schedule, we are in brand new episodes all summer.
Chuck Woolery: At the end of the summer, we'll see what happens!

BobQ:Chuck is the show coming back in the fall?

Chuck Woolery: There is a very good chance we'll be back in the fall, I mean this show is a very big show.
Chuck Woolery: The other thing is Super Greed.
Chuck Woolery: Super Greed was a special for the month of May, and if they run it again, I really don't know, we have no plans to run it again at this point, but this could change.
Chuck Woolery: Every time sweeps come up, there is some formation to make the show more exciting, and that's something we did, we doubled the money to $4 million. Maybe we'll have celebrities next time, we'll do Celebrity Greed, you never know!

PinkFloyd:What do you think separates Greed from other current "multi-million dollar game shows"?

Chuck Woolery: Good question, and I would like to thank you for asking it.
Chuck Woolery: One of the things that's very different, is the tension and dynamic between the players. These people are not only nervous for winning money but they are also nervous about each other.
Chuck Woolery: They have never met before doing the show. So it's a very interesting dynamic.
Chuck Woolery: They are a group of people working toward a common goal, to make as much money as possible.
Chuck Woolery: But they are also in competition for that goal, against each other as well as with each other. So there is a natural, dynamic people.
Chuck Woolery: The people are almost afraid of each other, but they have to help each other.
Chuck Woolery: It is very interesting, and very different.

Freebird:Has anyone ever gotten really mad at the captain for a wrong answer?

Chuck Woolery: Absolutely yes. Really, all different levels of mad. We've had people who have been extremely PO'd at the captain. And then we've had groups of people, part of the group--if you notice, I'm not using the word "team"--because in the biginning we used the word "team" and it was confusing.
Chuck Woolery: No one wants to see a member of their team knocked off. It was confusing for us as well as the audience.
Chuck Woolery: Because when I talk about the dynamic of working together and yet being threatened, we decided to change the team concept to a group.
Chuck Woolery: Well interestingly enough, when some of these groups of people didn't know the answer the captain had missed, they would be a little more forgiving.
Chuck Woolery: That's why I say this show is a very interesting show, to say the least.

TygerD:How do you keep a neutral expression on a big money question when you know the answer is right or wrong.

Chuck Woolery: I probably learned that on Love Connection. I try not to tip the person, it's my job not to tip the players and not to tip the audience as to what the answer is.
Chuck Woolery: Sometimes I don't know the answer, I don't always know what it is. Regis always knows the answers to his, sometimes I play along, it's more fun for me.
Chuck Woolery: So if you see me with a really blank face--it's because I don't know either!
Chuck Woolery: An example is a captain who missed a question that was really easy and all they had to do was sing the song and they would have gotten it.
Chuck Woolery: The other players were really, really mad at this person cause it took them right out of the game.
Chuck Woolery: The show aired three weeks ago.
Chuck Woolery: It was worth $200,000.
Chuck Woolery: Which phrase is in the "Star Spangled Banner"?
Chuck Woolery: "Rocket's red glare."
Chuck Woolery: "Amber waves of grain." "Home of the brave." "Twilight's last gleaming." "Dawn's early light." And "Let freedom ring."
Chuck Woolery: Easy, unless you are Roberta Goulet, she's from Canada, so naturally she forgot it!
Chuck Woolery: All she had to do was sing it through, and she said "Let freedom ring." She blew it and they were really hot. The team was livid with her.

takinover:The male on that team that lost to the "Star Spangled Banner" looked like he wanted to throw something at her.

Chuck Woolery: He looked like he wanted to throw hot lead at her! Yeah, they were mad!
Chuck Woolery: That's a perfect example of the pressure of the game. And by the way, I don't charge them with time. I don't put the clock on them. I don't make them step up to the plate and answer these questions in a timely manner. They can think about this stuff, and we would like them to, some of these questions require a great deal of thought.
Chuck Woolery: So it's a great example of people who just don't take their time, putting pressure on themselves, and then crack.
Chuck Woolery: And in all honesty, it's just my nature to be very sympathetic with these people. I truly want them to win. And I think you can tell that.
Chuck Woolery: I have a natural sympathy or simpatico with these players.

PlasmaMike:Do you enjoy the concept of Greed, would you have done anything different?

Chuck Woolery: Yes, I would have done something different, but it wouldn't have changed the concept of the game. I can't talk about it, because it's possible that someday it might happen, chances are it won't been the way I see it, but the concept is really the same, I would have just changed something else.

Chuck Woolery: I thought that Greed was the most imaginative--on the money concept--for a game show that I had seen in my career. I was that strong about it, and I still feel that strong about it. These things are extremely difficult to come up with, game shows are very difficult to come up with. And normally when you do a pilot it takes many twists and turns before it gets to the air.
Chuck Woolery: An example: Before Wheel of Fortune became Wheel of Fortune, it was called Shopper's Bazaar. I did the pilot, and it had people talking to each other on telephones. And it was bizarre! And it didn't make it.
Chuck Woolery: It evolved over a year into Wheel of Fortune. So they had a year to play with it. You get the picture everybody?
Chuck Woolery: This show was thought of, it was executed on paper, it was then executed on television as a special, not a pilot in seven weeks. That is beyond phenomenal. That is just extraordinary. Never happens. Very unusual.
Chuck Woolery: I remember someone saying to me, How hard can it be? And I can demonstrate how hard it is.
Chuck Woolery: Merv Griffin has the number one and number two shows in syndication in the world. Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. And he thought of them. Actually his ex-wife Julann thought of Jeopardy. But he gets credit for it. Jeopardy has been on the air for 36 years--almost 40 years!
Chuck Woolery: Wheel of Fortune is 25 years old!
Chuck Woolery: From apparently the most brilliant guy who ever conceived game shows.
Chuck Woolery: 25 years ago was the last time he thought of a new one. That's how tough it is. Is that tough enough for you? It's a very hard genre.

Noozie127:Have you ever wanted to play Greed yourself?

Chuck Woolery: I'm a terrible game player! LOL! I can host, but I don't think I'd be very good at playing, I think I'd crack quick! I give these people a lot of credit, I really do.
Chuck Woolery: One of the questions we had was, How many states begin with the letter M? See how fast anyone can come up with it. Go, time starts now....

Chuck Woolery: The correct answer is eight. But my point is, if the person had just thought about it, they could have come up with Michigan, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Missouri, Mississippi, Maine and Massachusetts. But they said five and so bingo--they were out of the game.
Chuck Woolery: If they had taken the time.

Chuck Woolery: If you take it section by section, East coast, Midwest... but it's sad to see people miss those kinds of questions, it really is.

yoeman:Why don't yaull have a week episode of Teen Greed? I think it would capture a large audience of young Americans.

Chuck Woolery: The production staff is taking it into high consideration. In the War Room it's high up on the wall. We would like to do a Teen Greed if FOX is amenable.

BobQ:Have you accidentally given away an answer to a question?

Chuck Woolery: I think I have, but I can't remember what it was. I'm also sure, we had to stop tape, I'm almost sure.

USAir1489:This is a longshot, but would Greed ever go on the road and tape from other locations, like Jeopardy! and Wheel do?

Chuck Woolery: Very funny you would say that, we thought of taking it on the road this summer, it was a big idea for a long time, but at the last minute, actually they are still thinking about it...coming to a city near you soon! Maybe!

vampira:I loved you on Love Connection!!!! Have you found the contestants of Greed to be as crazy as the ones on LC?

Chuck Woolery: No! Nobody is as crazy as the ones on Love Connection! That was a lot of fun for me. Glad you enjoyed it.

acosta:Do you miss Love Connection?

Chuck Woolery: Yes. I do.

Stros:Chuck--What does the "2 and 2" signal mean when you take a commercial break?

Chuck Woolery: It was an accident that actually I needed to make a phone call on a break. And I asked someone on the floor how much time I had, and they said two minutes.
Chuck Woolery: So I said, I'm going to need more time than that.
Chuck Woolery: And as I walked away, they said you have a second in and a second out, so actually you have two minutes and two seconds. So when I went to commercial, I held up my fingers in a peace sign and said we'll be back in 2 and 2. And it became my signature in my career.

ladeeda: Did anyone actually get married who met on Love Connection?

Chuck Woolery: To my knowledge, there are over 100 couples that got married. And a lot of children named Chuck! And a lot of girls named Charlene!

chanceit:How hard is it to become a contestant? Do you have anything to do with the screening?

Chuck Woolery: Let me announce something. If any of the people watching would like to be a contestant on Greed, we would love to have you.
Chuck Woolery: There is a test you have to take, I don't know how difficult it is because I haven't taken it, so I can't say how difficult it is, it's probably a reasonable level of difficulty. I don't think it's enough to put you off.
Chuck Woolery: I have nothing to do with the screening process personally, a lot of people think I do, but I don't.

takinover:Greed's Web site states that in the future that the show is going to go on the road to get its contestants. Do you know when?

Chuck Woolery: The plans aren't in concrete yet, they are in loose mud, but they will come together, and when they do, we'll let you know.

awyeah:Does Chuck consider himself a "lady's man"?

Chuck Woolery: Absolutely! LOL! NO question about it. I love women. However, I really love my wife. But she's a woman, so she falls into the category.
Chuck Woolery: A lady's man to me is someone who likes women. So I would consider myself that in that respect. With respect.

hotmama:Are you married to Joanne Whorley?

Chuck Woolery: No. Never have been. I'm sure she's a nice person, but I wasn't ever married to her. I'm married to Teri Nelson, who is David Nelson's daughter, of Ozzie and Harriet.

OBBO:DO YOU HAVE ANY CHILDREN?

Chuck Woolery: Eight...I have two children that are just a couple of years older than I am.

Noozie127:Has your wife ever expressed interest in being on the show?

Chuck Woolery: NO! LOL! She's not eligible number one, but number two, I don't think she would want to do that. It would be hard for her. But it would be harder for me than for her.
Chuck Woolery: But actually, if she heard me doing this, she'd probably say, Are you kidding? I'd LOVE to be a contestant, and I'd have to eat my words.
Chuck Woolery: So there are two rules to follow concerning women and men and husbands and wives. Rule number one:
Chuck Woolery: You never, ever know what is in a woman's mind.
Chuck Woolery: Rule number two: When you think you know what's in a woman's mind, refer back to rule number one.

acosta:How long do you think the public will have an appetite for game shows like Greed? Is this '50s mania all over again?

Chuck Woolery: That's a very good question. The appetite for game shows I don't think has ever subsided, even after the fiasco with 21 back in the '50s. They've always been around in a different form.
Chuck Woolery: They went from primetime to daytime--it's interesting to look at it--from daytime to syndication, and now they're back in primetime.
Chuck Woolery: I'm talking about good game shows. There are great ones, good ones, not so good ones....
Chuck Woolery: So if you look at the success of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!, 36 years and 25 years, they can stay forever. Probably the public likes them more than anybody. It's a strange thing to say, I'm not sure they're a favorite of this community here, but the public certainly loves them.
Chuck Woolery: To be a contestant-- I'm going to get this in--call 1-900-407-7777.
Chuck Woolery: You notice, there are a lot of 7s in that--it's the number of perfection, I think! Or it is now! So I think you'll be a perfect contestant whoever calls.

jhuhn:Will we see any more $1,000,000 moments before the series is over?

Chuck Woolery: Were they fun? $1,000,000 moments, I loved that, I forgot about that. Possibly...they were so successful, everybody loved a $1,000,000 moment.
Chuck Woolery: That's another one of those little tricks, that you put in and work beautifully, but are hard to come up with. I'm glad you mentioned that.

giggle:Hey Chuck! Love your show! Who has been the biggest winner so far?

Chuck Woolery: The biggest winner so far has Curtis Warren on show number four, he won $410,000.
Chuck Woolery: On a $1,000,000 moment, he won another $1,000,000. So he has a total of $1.41 million. A lot of money.
Chuck Woolery: A lot of people will remember Curtis. He looked like he combed his hair with a hand grenade. I understand he was an air traffic controller. That's probably why his hair is that way. I hear it's a stressful job!
Chuck Woolery: That was a surprise to me, not that he won that money, but who he was was a surprise to me because the audience, as well as the production team, as well as me, had kind of figured they knew who Curtis was.
Chuck Woolery: He was kind of arrogant...and he wasn't that person at all, he surprised everyone, at least he surprised me.
Chuck Woolery: When he won the money he began to call for his wife over and over again. It was like Rocky.
Chuck Woolery: I didn't know he was married. And when we finally located his wife in the audience, she was nine months pregnant. I didn't know they were going to have a baby.
Chuck Woolery: She came down on stage, money was pouring out of this big cannon we'd shot off, dollar bills and hundred dollar bills were coming down around them. He took her face in his hands...he looked her in the eye, and said, "Baby, this is our time. You know I love you. This is our time." Curtis was a cool guy.

jenn:Hey...where does all this money come from that you give away??

Chuck Woolery: It's my personal money! I go to the bank every day, and write a check to all these contestants. And never forget that! No--I don't know where it comes from, it just magically appears, I suppose from advertisers.

TheBanker:Just a comment...Chuck you are one of the few that wears clothes VERY WELL. Love your gold tie against the black tonight. You always look chic!

Chuck Woolery: Thank you very much! I do all my wardrobe myself, so thank you!

awyeah:Does Chuck like the Internet?

Chuck Woolery: Yes. I do.
Chuck Woolery: It's the wave of the future. It is the future I think.

bradley800:Are you sure you're gonna sing the National Anthem at a sporting event anytime soon?

Chuck Woolery: I am unsure of that! Where did you hear that! No, I'm not going to sing the national anthem, no one has asked me. I had a musical career that was described as "riding the crest of an undertoe."

bubbles:Hey Chuck!!! Wow! You've been on TV for a long time!! Whatever are you going to do after all this is done?

Chuck Woolery: Go fishing!
Chuck Woolery: If you want Greed on the air, all you have to do is watch it this summer, tell your friends to watch it.
Chuck Woolery: It's word of mouth that keeps these things on the air and builds the audience. And remember, we are showing new episodes all summer long.

bubbles:Keep Greed on!! Keep Greed on!! Keep Greed on!!!

deedee:Chuck you are the "hottest" game show host on TV.
