Vitamin C - September 13, 2000
Colleen Fitzpatrick, aka Vitamin C, took the unlikely road from punk princess to dance diva! In addition to her chart-topping singing career, Vitamin C has acted in Liar, Liar and Dracula 2000, among other films.
On Wednesday, September 13th, artist Vitamin C gave online fans the lowdown during her FOX.com chat. Here's what Vitamin C had to say about her influences, next single and Music Mania 2000!

FOXcom_Host: Okay, our guest arrived!
FOXcom_Host: Vitamin is here to chat with us!

Vitamin_C: Hey everybody! I'm Vitamin C. Ask away!

VITAMIN C Alison: Why did you pick vitamin c as your name?

VITAMIN C gmoney: Where did you come up with the name” Vitamin C"?

VITAMIN C Matty: What does C stand for?

VITAMIN C vitamincrules: What was your given name? and how did you get your nickname?

Vitamin_C: After I finished my record, I still didn't have a name, and I decided I wanted a name that was instantly recognizable. My album was positive and good for you...I thought it was a fun, silly, playful name.
Vitamin_C: My first initial was C, so I was trying to do something with the C (my name is Colleen), I was trying to do something with different names, but Vitamin C just made the most sense. People call me C, it was my nickname growing up!

VITAMIN C Matty: Would you ever do an Orange Juice commercial?

Vitamin_C: LOL!
Vitamin_C: I don't know, maybe, I don't imagine I would, who knows? I don't actually drink a lot of orange juice, I'm more of a water, club soda kind of girl.

VITAMIN C Matty: Are you a natural red head?

Vitamin_C: I have kind of dirty blondish red hair. I'd say it's more blondish brownish red, but it's more a mixture of blond and brown. But when I was a baby, up till I was about 3, I had bright red, crazy red hair, it's kind of funny.

VITAMIN C vitamincrules: The girl that sits across from me at work has orange hair, and I think she wants to be just like you. What else could she do that would emulate you?

Vitamin_C: LOL! I don't know, I'm a pretty basic person, she'd have to join a punk rock band and play in it for a few years and then leave the band, and become a singer with a fruity name!

VITAMIN C foxy1:I was a fan of your band Eve's Plumb, why did you leave and was it named after the actress who played Jan on The Brady Bunch?

Vitamin_C: Yes it was named after Jan Brady, and it's a long story. But essentially Eve's Plum had run its course, both creatively and personally and even professionally I think. I really wanted to keep the band together, and certain members didn't want to continue playing.
Vitamin_C: So I began replacing the members, and as I started doing that I realized it was becoming a different project, and if it was going to be a different project I should call it something else.
Vitamin_C: Musically I had been looking to do some stuff that was a little bit more groove based, including samples, loops, and I had just bought a home recording system and I was interested in exploring that side of writing and the technology. And some people in the band weren't into that at all. They were stuck in a very “inde” rock mentality.

VITAMIN C Matty: Do you play any instruments?

Vitamin_C: I play a little bit of everything. But nothing to be all that proud of. I can play guitar and bass, bass probably the best, and drums pretty well. That's to write a song, and jam with people. But I don't let the fact that I'm not very good at anything stop me. I like it's so much. I just do it cause it's fun. I think everyone should try and play an instrument. Not seriously, just for fun.

VITAMIN C Alison: Are you going to make a new cd soon?

Vitamin_C:Yes. I have a new CD coming out November 21. I don't know the name of it yet. I have a new song coming out in October called The Itch.

VITAMIN C vitamincrules:I heard you started as an actress... Is that true?

VITAMIN C langtreelil:Hi! I heard you used to act. Do you think you'll go back to that?

Vitamin_C:No I didn't start as an actress, I started as a dancer. I was trained as a dancer, I had danced all my life, I had danced in videos, and whatever, in hip hop clubs, shows, all sorts of weird stuff. From there, I was able to do some acting jobs, but I still was much more into the music. I began writing and singing in bands around the same time. Very recently I've returned back to acting.
Vitamin_C:Because I just finished a movie called Wes Craven Presents Dracula 2000.

VITAMIN C foxy1:You were in the movie Hairspray, do you want to pursue and acting career?

Vitamin_C:I enjoy acting a lot, I think it's really fun. It's especially fun to not be yourself for an extended period of time. So yeah, I would like to do more of it, I get sick of being me and it's fun to escape. I think of acting as an escape.

VITAMIN C langtreelil:Do you like singing or acting best?

Vitamin_C:They are totally different for me, because I'm not really a serious singer, vocalist type. For me being a singer is expressing an idea, or a particular feeling or some words or a vibe that I have. It's very personal to me. Acting is the opposite. When I 'm sick of being me, it's nice to say someone elses' words, to not have control, to not be responsible for coming up with the creative idea.
Vitamin_C:They are very different. They are both releases. Creatively being a musician is a definite release of all my tension, and all the things going on in my life and things I've been thinking about.
Vitamin_C:When it's time to act, it's time to forget all those things and become somebody else.

VITAMIN C punterthompson:Would you ever do a major dance routine as part of your live show?

Vitamin_C:Yes. I think I'm going to be doing more of that on this record. This record is a bit more groove based and already I've begun doing that. For example, on Summer Music Mania, I perform kind of a big dance number, and I'll probably do more of those.
Vitamin_C:But I also like performing with a band too, because when you do a big dance number you usually don't have live musicians.

VITAMIN C Matty: Do you work out? How do you stay in such good shape?

Vitamin_C: Up until very recently, I used to work out constantly, but I've gotten lazy the past two months. It's been really hard. I've been traveling insane amounts.
Vitamin_C:I usually do work out at the gym, and sometimes I'll hire a trainer to kick my butt.

VITAMIN C punterthompson: are there any duets you'd like to do? with anyone we'd know or admire?

Vitamin_C:I have a fantasy - real odd one - but I always say I'd like to do a duet with Steve Harwell of Smashmouth - I think it would be a real interesting pairing!

VITAMIN C MIkeDaddy:What kinds of music do you listen to?

Vitamin_C:I listen to a real wide variety of music. My favorite records right now are the Olive record, I love the new Madonna song, I tend to like sort of interesting sonic records - I love the Sneaker Pimps...
Vitamin_C:BT, and basically I'm more about the songs, if it's a good song, it could be any style of music. My favorite album of the year is Eminem...

VITAMIN C grapelila:What's in you CD player right now? What do you listen to when you drive?

Vitamin_C:It's funny because I don't often drive cause I live in New York City, but seeing as I'm in LA right now, today I had this record called BT.

VITAMIN C Matty:What is your favorite song? By you or anyone else.

Vitamin_C:That's hard, I have many favorite songs...whew! I don't know if I could just choose one...

VITAMIN C grapelila:Have you felt as if you have 'made it' yet? As in, do you feel famous?

Vitamin_C:No I don't really feel famous.
Vitamin_C:I know that I am able to do more work, I can do the stuff I've wanted to be able to do without having eight jobs, I can play music without doing this other stuff. I'm very happy about that.
Vitamin_C:But in general, but it's amazing how much you feel the same.

VITAMIN C Matty:Is it hard being in the spotlight?

Vitamin_C:Sometimes it can be hard. I don't think everyone's cut out for it. ANd I'm a little shy so sometimes it can be hard. But in general, I don't think you can do it everyday unless you are at a point where it is OK with you.
Vitamin_C:I'm not the kind of person who needs to be the center of attention when I walk into a room. I like to observe. But when the spotlight's on me, I'm OK with that. Or else I'd get another job!

VITAMIN C grapelila:What was your first reaction when you heard your song played on the radio for the very first time?

Vitamin_C:That's a funny thing, because the first time I ever heard a song played, was a long time ago with Eve's Plum.
Vitamin_C:BUt in June of 1999 a radio station in NYC started playing Graduation, and the album wasn't finished yet. It wasn't a single, they were planning to release Smile.
Vitamin_C:KTU started playing it.
Vitamin_C:I had heard a rumor that they were playing it every night in the evening, around 7 PM. So I came home and turned on the radio as a goof, I said to a friend let's see if it's on, and Graduation was on the radio.
Vitamin_C:It was so unexpected, the record company wasn't trying to get it on the radio, there wasn't even a CD pressed, and somehow it was on the radio.
Vitamin_C:That was really special. It was really weird, it was one of the few times I got really emotional, I was so shocked. This year when they released it I was better prepared. But it was such a surprise, I didn't think they were even going to release that song.

VITAMIN C duck_2001:Hey Vita C, I love that song "Graduation" what motivated you to do that song?

Vitamin_C:I wrote the song about friendship, a specific friendship in my life.
Vitamin_C:It's about moving on, transition.
Vitamin_C:Because things like that happen over and over in life, and when you graduate for the first time it happens but then as you go on in life, it continues to happen. You get a new job, you move on. You move to a different city, make new friends, there is constant separation anxiety in one's life.

VITAMIN C vitamincrules:You seem to incorporate a lot of growing up/reflection in your music.... Are you that reflective and wistful in real life?

Vitamin_C:No.
Vitamin_C:Not at all.
Vitamin_C:Maybe if you get to know me really well, I'm a sensitive softy, type person, but I probably don't let a lot of people get that close. Though I'm very much a romantic and believe in all that stuff, there is a side to me that's fairly cynical. And I really believe in humor. Humor is the most important thing, and I'm not afraid to laugh at myself and other people.
Vitamin_C:So I'm not so serious, I'm a little bit more silly...
Vitamin_C:I have a big mouth kinda!...

VITAMIN C Mark:How long did it take you to make the video for the song Graduation?

Vitamin_C:We shot the video for two days in Van Nuys, California.

VITAMIN C smiley2000: Hey, the first song I heard from you was "Smile" and I was wondering why you decided to do that as your first single

Vitamin_C:Quite honestly, it was the first song that was done.
Vitamin_C: And everyone thought it was a good song. I don't know if it would have been my choice for a first single.
Vitamin_C:That song just had a good summer vibe to it I think.

VITAMIN C Matty:did you name Smile after the famous un-released Beach Boys album of the same name?

Vitamin_C:No. But I'm a huge Beach Boys fan, and that's very....Smiley Smile, a lot of people don't know that. My brother had an amazing Beach Boys collections, so maybe subconsciously. But the song is about trying to get thru a really bad day.

VITAMIN C Matty:Will your new album be really different?

Vitamin_C:I don't know if it will be REALLY different, it is different. I worked with some different people this time.
Vitamin_C:And I would describe it as a little e more groove based. It's still kind of quirky.
Vitamin_C:I think it may be a little more aggressive in certain areas.

VITAMIN C AndMinerals:What do you think the most interesting music is right now?

Vitamin_C:I tend to, I like music that combines different influences.
Vitamin_C:Like I enjoy the big, kind of dance groove with a melody over it. Like when the Chemical Bros. did that thing with Oasis. Or when someone like Madonna works with someone like Mirways. ANd even to a certain degree, the whole rap/metal combination. I think it's interesting to combine different things. But truthfully I think the most new innovative stuff has to be rap. That's why I think the Eminem record - the production is good, but the lyrics, it's just a great record, whether or not you agree
Vitamin_C:with his politics or not.

VITAMIN C punterthompson:do you feel pressured to churn out albums at a faster rate in this singles-oriented marketplace?

Vitamin_C:Yeah I feel a certain amount of pressure. I don't know if it has to do with the way albums are made today or the way the media is.
Vitamin_C:There are so many different factors, people's attention span, it's different even than when I was growing up. But historically most musicians have a small window in getting their stuff heard. I look it as just doing it when I can and hopefully I'll be lucky enough to do it over the years.
Vitamin_C:But I hope not to do the same thing over and over again, so there will be ups and downs...which is OK, I'm not part of the factory that produces all this pop stuff,
Vitamin_C:so it might take a little longer, and be weirder, but it has to be interesting to me ultimately.

VITAMIN C vitamincrules:If you could hang out with Eminem or Jewel for 24 hours, which would you choose and why?

Vitamin_C:LOL! Oh my God, Eminem!
Vitamin_C:I don't need to explain, I think it's completely self-explanatory. I might not get along with Eminem, we might not have the best time hanging out, but it would certainly be a lot more interesting and fun. LOL!

VITAMIN C grapelila:How do you feel about the sudden explosion of all these pop queens?

Vitamin_C:LOL! I think every so many years there's another sudden explosion.
Vitamin_C:I think it's cool that there are females making music, especially when I was growing up there weren't that many. But I wish more of them would write their own music and have more interesting things to say. A lot of them have nothing to say.

VITAMIN C Matty:Do you think teen pop will be a trend much longer?

Vitamin_C:Yeah, as long as there are teens, there will be teen pop. And some of it is really good. I don't think a lot of these bands are popular because they are teenagers, or because only teenagers like them. I think in many instances we all like the music. You don't sell 8 million records to just teenagers.

VITAMIN C MSW2000:Of the pop superstars, who do you prefer?

Vitamin_C:If Madonna still counts as one, I like Madonna. I consider Eminem to be a pop superstar. Who else?
Vitamin_C:I like Britney...
Vitamin_C:I like what she wore in the MTV awards.

VITAMIN C MIkeDaddy:What do you like to do when your not being a music star?

Vitamin_C:I travel so much that when I'm not working, I like to stay at home and I love to watch movies.
Vitamin_C:I'm a huge baseball fan. So you might see me at a Yankees game, or in another city I might go to a baseball game, big yellow hair under a hat watching the Boys of Summer.

VITAMIN C i_luv_vitC:where do you see yourself in 10 years

Vitamin_C:LOL! I see myself probably writing music and producing for other people.
Vitamin_C:And maybe still performing, still acting, and writing songs for myself. But I'd like to start moving behind the scenes at some point. Where I could get fat, and not dye my hair yellow, and sleep all day and stuff! Just kidding!

VITAMIN C music_mania_fan:What do you love most about performing?

Vitamin_C:When you perform live it's really cool to interact with the audience, I like to get them involved, I think that's the best part of it.

VITAMIN C Lucky:what is the one thing you can't leave behind when you go on tour?

Vitamin_C:Wow, that's a tough one. I've gotten to a point where I can leave almost everything behind, except my toothbrush.
Vitamin_C:I have a few CD's I tend to always take with me.
Vitamin_C:And they are an odd mix. But I take Dusty in Memphis, - LOL! A Ray of Light. And Filter...
Vitamin_C:But I really hardly ever go on tour without a dictionary, oddly enough. Cause there's always stuff I need to look up.

VITAMIN C gman:do you like to play games on your free time

Vitamin_C:I do.
Vitamin_C:I have been known on more than one occasion to play video baseball.
Vitamin_C:And I play computer games if my computer is with me. And then I have a real, obsession with Tetris, as old as it is!
Vitamin_C:And I find that it always helps to have Tetris around.

VITAMIN C grapelila:Vit C, how much time in a regular working day do you have actual time to yourself?

Vitamin_C:It depends on the day.
Vitamin_C:Like today I won't have any time for myself until the end of the day, which will be around 9:30. Maybe then I'll get something to eat, see a friend or go to bed. Depends on how tired I am. I spend a lot of time alone, I work alone if I'm writing.
Vitamin_C:Other days, I'll be out and about all day, like today I've been out since 7 AM, so it depends. And there's always airplanes. I spend more time on airplanes than anywhere else probably.

VITAMIN C punterthompson: would you be open to having big dance music stars remix your tunes?

Vitamin_C: Yeah, that's something I've never really done, though I did work with Jonathan Peters on the last record. It would have to be the right song though.

VITAMIN C MSW2000: How was touring with 98 degrees?

Vitamin_C: It was great fun. The audience was amazing every night. And I had a really good time.

VITAMIN C foxy1:How did you get involved with Music Mania?

Vitamin_C:I was a presenter last year, and I had a really good time. I just said to everyone there, it would be great to perform one year. So they asked me this year to come and perform.

VITAMIN C gmoney:What do you think about performing at Music Mania 2000?

Vitamin_C:I thought it was amazing. The audience was so excited, and enthusiastic, and I had a really great time. It was a cool thing to be a part of , there were so many different artists, everyone was there.

VITAMIN C foxy1: What are some other Music Mania bands that you admire or enjoyed performing with?

Vitamin_C:I'm a fan of NSYNC, I think they are super talented.

Vitamin_C:And though I didn't get to see them, I really like Destiny's Child too. And Sisqo and I did just did a duet, for this movie Getting Over Alisson, so it was fun to see him.

VITAMIN C grapelila:Are you headlining your own shows now? Or who do you open for?

Vitamin_C:Right now I'm not touring, I'm just working on the new album. I'm doing a few sporadic dates here or there.

VITAMIN C MSW2000:If you were asked to do the National Anthem for the Superbowl, would you take it or turn it down?

Vitamin_C: I would probably turn it down. I'd be way too nervous.

VITAMIN C AndMinerals: If you could produce for someone now, who would you choose?

Vitamin_C: There is a band out of New York called Friendship 7.
Vitamin_C: And they are an amazing band and I would love to produce some songs for them.
Vitamin_C: I think the singer has a great voice, and the guy who writes the music is really creative and talented. You can sing along with every song.

VITAMIN C Alison: Do you miss the "normal" life?

Vitamin_C: No, my life is surprisingly normal.
Vitamin_C: But I don't miss out, I have many exciting, interesting experiences, and I get to meet unique people. And I get to have yellow hair and dress like a freak. I always used to get in trouble at work for dyeing my hair. So this has made my life a lot easier!

VITAMIN C gman: if you were to do something else what would it be

Vitamin_C: I would probably be a teacher of some sort. Or a writer.

FOXcom_Host: We have to say good-bye to Vitamin C now!
FOXcom_Host: Thank you so much for being with us for this chat!
