When Paula Devicq joined Party of Five as Charlie's love interest, Kirsten, the chemistry just clicked! Paula hit her mark as Kirsten struggled with anguish, love and the joys of marriage and motherhood.
fox_chat_host: As the show ends on the East Coast, Paula joins us from NY fox_chat_host: in front of the TV set, and she was watching! fox_chat_host: HI!
paula_devicq_live: Hi! paula_devicq_live: I would love to say thank you so much for watching and your support and loyalty. paula_devicq_live: If it wasn't for you, we would never have made it six years.
manolis_varnassinger asks: paula I watch the show from the first episode its one of the most beautiful shows on TV you are all wonderful and talented actors what are you going to miss most from party of five
paula_devicq_live: The relationships
and friendships that I've been so fortunate to have over the last
six years.
madame_ex_2000 asks: How
do you feel about the show ending
paula_devicq_live: I feel emotional.
Not sad. Just emotional. paula_devicq_live: Because it was an amazing run and it's time to move on. paula_devicq_live: But it's extremely emotional.
manolis_varnassinger asks:
the show is fantastic one of the best. If you could write the
ending of the show how would you end it
paula_devicq_live:
Wow! Huge question! I'm sure the writers had just as much trouble
as I am. I think the writers did it justice, and made it come full
circle as to why all the family was put together in the first place. paula_devicq_live: And why they
needed to stay together. And now they don't. And that's a part of
growing up, evolving and it's all good. paula_devicq_live: Nothing ever
stays the same. paula_devicq_live: The writers
and creators did a great job. Amy and Chris wrote the last episode
as well as the first and created the entire show. I think they knew
what they were doing.
emma_the_butterfly asks: Will you miss going to the set of 'PO5" everyday?
paula_devicq_live: Yes! Very much.
bree23fem1975 asks: Paula how did you feel, when you where on the set...on the last show?
paula_devicq_live: Oh, good question. I felt everything was normal, and everything was different. And most of all, I just felt. We cried a lot, but it was all good emotions. We felt a bond that will always remain. paula_devicq_live: I took with me, I think probably the most amazing six years of my life. I probably won't know how incredible and meaningful it's been until later. paula_devicq_live: However, I know now that it was probably one of the most important times of my life and I cherish it.
manolis_varnassinger asks: paula you are very pretty actress did you always wanted to act and in what age you get started
paula_devicq_live: No, never thought about it, ever. paula_devicq_live: Started at 26.
manolis_varnassinger asks: whats it like being part of a talented ensemble cast
paula_devicq_live: It's like being in a family that when you are on a series, it's different than anything else, because you grow up with these people, go through life with these people, and they become your family. paula_devicq_live: It's a part of your life - it's amazing, I can't even tell you how much it means to me.
bree23fem1975 asks: Paula, how did you prepare for a mentally depressed woman?
paula_devicq_live: Oh boy! I read a lot of books, one in particular, called Darkness Visible. I spoke to my producer who helped me understand what mental depression is. paula_devicq_live: With their information and with the research I did on my own, and with my own emotions and my own pain from my own life, not that I was depressed, but everyone has pain and relate to certain losses in their life... paula_devicq_live: I tried to put those things together and make it real.
paula_devicq_live: And it was hard because I never wanted to play it in a way that wasn't real. paula_devicq_live: Because when you don't know what it feels like, you don't want to misrepresent the disease. paula_devicq_live: So the biggest fear I had as an actress was to make sure I found something that could touch and relate to people in that state, and to people who have loved ones in that state, so that they could understand.
panicky1 asks: Paula, some of your best work was when "Kirsten" was sick. Was that particularly challenging to do?
paula_devicq_live: Incredibly challenging. Like I said, my biggest fear was that I would not portray in a real way. paula_devicq_live: That I tried so hard to understand what it felt like. It was a big responsibility.
bailey136_ca asks: I really
liked the endo storyline as I have the disease and know that it
is not well known. Your show has brought it out into the mainstream
thank you.
paula_devicq_live: That's what
Party of 5 has emphasized, is dealing with issues where people that
are either knowledgeable about or afraid to talk about, and it's
all OK.
babeluv14 asks: How much
are you and "Kirsten" alike?
paula_devicq_live: Oh! Very much alike, in that we're very nurturing. paula_devicq_live: And very much responsible for our lives. And for other peoples' lives and our relationships. paula_devicq_live: I think responsibility is what Kirsten is all about.
goldberg54 asks: Hi Paula, executive producer Ken Topolsky told me that the character of Kirsten was originally supposed to be a "fantasy" vision of Bailey's when looking for a nanny... did you ever think Kirsten would go on to be such a huge part of the Party of Five??
paula_devicq_live: No! paula_devicq_live: I had no idea. paula_devicq_live: And that was I guess the surprising part of PO 5 for me because my original 3 scenes in the pilot I didn't know where it was going to go. paula_devicq_live: My part wasn't
written in it. And when the series got picked up and I was offered
a regular role, I had no idea who she would be and where she would
end up and how far she would go.
david_jolly asks: No question,
Paula you have to be one of the most beautiful woman I have ever
seen. Thank you for staying with the show
rentgal99 asks: What was the most difficult episode for you to do acting-wise?
paula_devicq_live: I have to go back to depression to that episode, because that storyline was the most the challenging and the most far away from me in terms of emotions. paula_devicq_live: It was the most difficult because I was on territory that was unknown, so I was praying to God that I was doing the right thing.
shytown67 asks: If you could guest star in any TV show what would it be?
paula_devicq_live: I would love to guest star on a show like Ally McBeal. paula_devicq_live: It's got the great combination of drama and comedy. paula_devicq_live: I would love to guest star on Friends, because they are so funny and so good at what they do, and I would probably learn so much by watching them.
bree23fem1975 asks: Paula, what will you be doing in the future? Will we see you on any other shows? Any in the works?
paula_devicq_live: I have no idea. paula_devicq_live: You'll see as quickly as I see! LOL!
jenniferrhale asks: How was everyone
after the last show was taped??
paula_devicq_live: Everybody
was pretty much feeling the same thing. It was like six years of
growing up. paula_devicq_live: Lacey was
like ten, I watched her grow up. She grown into the most beautiful
woman I've ever met in my life, an amazing individual. paula_devicq_live: Everybody,
Scott, Neve, Matthew, Michael, Scott Grimes, all of these people,
and Jeremy, Oh, my God, they are all, and they were all feeling
the same thing. paula_devicq_live: We all shared
a very special time together.
paula_devicq_live: It's hard
to understand what that feels like. I think the most important thing
about this series is that we spent time together. And not two months,
but like six years. paula_devicq_live: Everyone
has grown, and blossomed, and we've all been a part of that together,
and that is what life is. paula_devicq_live: So I can't
think of anything more wonderful than that.
paula_devicq_live: And I just
watched the last episode and I feel - wow! - I'm in awe, they are
my family and I will miss them. But I know I will see them.
pheobe1389 asks: do you feel
a strong "family" bond I guess you could call it has ended?
paula_devicq_live:
Yes. It's very real, because they are your own family, like in real
life, siblings go off and make their own life, and that's exactly
what we all should do and that's what we did. paula_devicq_live: Life is individual.
And life means different things to different people, and people
should follow their dreams.
punkin315_40004 asks: Do you know that your character has affected many lives including my own?
paula_devicq_live: Gosh! No I don't. And yes, I'm so glad. paula_devicq_live: I know that you people have told me that, and that makes me feel so fulfilled. It's not a job, it's actually...it's, what's the word, it's an amazing, amazing opportunity. paula_devicq_live: And it is a chance to give voice to things that matter to people and that help people, and that's why I do what I do.
shytown67 asks: How did you start you're acting career ?
paula_devicq_live: I never knew I wanted to be an actress, I never thought about it. But I had the opportunity to try. paula_devicq_live: I did a play first in New York, and PO5 was my second job. And I was so scared, because I did not know what I was doing. paula_devicq_live: But I said to myself, go with your instincts, and hope to God you won't get fired!
dawn_roses asks: What was your first experience on the big screen?
paula_devicq_live: I did a little independent film called Dinner and Driving. paula_devicq_live: And then a little film called Kill The Man. paula_devicq_live: And I did one thing with Richard Gere in Runaway Bride although it got cut!
sailortenoh asks: I met you and Jennifer Aspen last year at a charity event for pediatric AIDS..And I was wondering if you do anything with other charities
paula_devicq_live: I actually just did a pediatric AIDS event in New York on Sunday, and it was great. paula_devicq_live: And I do as many charities as I can when I am available to do them.
latifa3 asks: PAULA ARE
YOU RECONIZED A LOT IN PUBLIC? LIKE WHEN YOU GO SHOPPING OR SOMETHING???
paula_devicq_live: Yeah! LOL! paula_devicq_live: It's actually really sweet. At first when I started getting recognized it was weird, because it's strange, people are looking at you and you feel vulnerable in a way. paula_devicq_live: Now I'm more used to it, and have more of a handle on it, and it's actually nice, because people are really sweet when they come up to me so how can I not love that.
celticdark asks: Who were your biggest influences as acting coaches and who would you recommend studying with today?
paula_devicq_live: For me, I am probably the worst person to ask. If I were to tell you you'd probably freak out. paula_devicq_live: I never really studied. The biggest influence in my life has been my mother, and though she is not an actress, she is truth. And I am very close to her. paula_devicq_live: Everything I learned from her I live. paula_devicq_live: Amazing woman.
paula_devicq_live: And I guess she is my acting coach actually, not that she was ever trying to be my acting coach. paula_devicq_live: It's just that I watched the way my mother lived her life and I can't help admire it because it comes from truth. paula_devicq_live: And as an actor, if you come from truth, you are doing your job, and you are serving some kind of truth and realism. So for me, it's my mom.
mystic_spiral_gal asks: What would you say to inspiring, young actors? Do you encourage them to get into performing art?
paula_devicq_live: I say to them, there is nothing so rare as an act of your own.
MrZer asks: Does she hope to win a Oscar in the future?
paula_devicq_live: If I deserve it.
po5psycho asks: How does it feel to know that you've been part of one of the best shows on television. You've all touched many lives, and have moved all us fans to tears. We love you for it. How does it feel?
paula_devicq_live: It feels good, but it feels like I need to do more.
po5psycho asks: What was it like having Kathleen Noone play your mom? She's real cool!
paula_devicq_live: Well it was interesting, because she is very different from my mother in my real life. paula_devicq_live: Her approach was different from my mother. paula_devicq_live: I knew, as Kirsten, that she loved me so much. paula_devicq_live: I know as Paula that my mom loves me so much. paula_devicq_live: But their approach towards me is so different. Kathleen's approach towards Kirsten was more of a passive aggressive approach. Whereas my mom is more right here, right now. She is my best friend and I can tell her anything.
dukeschick00000 asks: If you could have been any other character on the show, who would you be, and WHY?
paula_devicq_live: Wow! Something I've never thought about so let me take a second to think. paula_devicq_live: I think I probably would have been Matthew. paula_devicq_live: Matthew's character. Because it's very deep, not unlike Kirsten, but has a lot of issues to deal with that he didn't understand right away that were subliminal. paula_devicq_live: And it's interesting to play a character who feels something but isn't sure why he is feeling it.
moshie_2000 asks: Did you individually, as a cast member, have input into the shows? Were writers receptive to your ideas?
paula_devicq_live: Yes, absolutely,
sometimes. paula_devicq_live: Not very often, because our writers are so amazing that we normally don't have to say anything because it's so right on, truthful and honest. paula_devicq_live: But I would say there were 2 to 3 times that I said something, something like, I don't think she would feel this or say this, and immediately, they were like, tell me what you think, and we will totally work with you on that. They were totally open to that, but it didn't happen more than 2 or 3 times in six years, because they were so good. paula_devicq_live: But when we did it was completely respected and regarded, and we worked around it, it was good!
sweetlips_025 asks: On party of Five you got to see everyone grow up on TV .How do you think you grew from Party of Five as a person
paula_devicq_live: I grew so much, oh gosh! paula_devicq_live: Not only did I grow in time, or in years, time just allows you to grow regardless, whether you want to or not. paula_devicq_live: But I grew a lot from my character, the way they wrote her. paula_devicq_live: I think the biggest thing I can take from my character, is to really understand the word forgiveness and to really understand another person's point of view. paula_devicq_live: I think it's so important to put yourself in someone else's shoes and not judge them , but to accept them for who they are.
dancepopdiva asks: How did you feel your character evolved during the course of the past six year on P O 5?
paula_devicq_live: Well, she went through a lot of growth. A growth within a relationship, within another family, growth within her own family seeing things that were not necessarily great. And went through a growth in her own self, especially going through depression, and tackling that. paula_devicq_live: Looking at herself and deciding as an adult what she really needed in life. paula_devicq_live: But you can only know that by looking at yourself, and I think she did that.
paula_devicq_live: There were so many elements around her that were causing her to reflect. paula_devicq_live: And I think she did and I think she picked the right choices. She picked truth. paula_devicq_live: The thing I loved playing her the most was that I eventually found the truth. Even if she was in denial or screwing up in some way, she eventually found the truth.
ShiShKiEBoB asks: Were you disappointed that the show was never nominated for any Emmys
paula_devicq_live: That's a funny thing, no, you know why, those awards don't really mean a lot. paula_devicq_live: But I never felt that PO5 was not a quality show, so even though we were never recognized, it never bothered me, because I knew in my heart that it was a great show. paula_devicq_live: I knew it spoke to people. That's why we're actors, not to get an Emmy, but to relate to people. paula_devicq_live: People have told me that this show has changed their life. And for me, that is an Emmy.
shadowsofpast asks: Paula I just want to say, thanks for being part of party. You've given individuals like myself, more belief in the person we are.
paula_devicq_live: You have to understand that even though it's over and I have been on it for six years, I still feel as lucky as I did the first day I shot the pilot. paula_devicq_live: I could cry. It's six years of my life. paula_devicq_live: And I would kill for it. I love it. I'm not sad it's over because it's time to move on. But it's taught me as much as it's taught everyone else.
halfapp asks: There was a point in the show, when it was near cancellation. Were you afraid?
paula_devicq_live: I wasn't because I was too green and new to be afraid. paula_devicq_live: All I knew was that we were doing a good thing, and if it was meant to be, it would be, and if it wasn't, it wouldn't be. Because I'm a huge believer in faith. paula_devicq_live: But I am glad we didn't get axed! Because we've had six years of episodes that I KNOW have made a difference in people's lives. I know they've made a difference in my life.
po54ever asks: Are you planning on jumping right back into more projects or do you plan on taking some time off?
paula_devicq_live: Good question! I plan on leaving it up to the gods.
CelestialSilverwolf asks: Paula, are they possibly speculating a reunion in a few years?
paula_devicq_live: I don't know! paula_devicq_live: But I'd be interested in seeing everybody! I think we need to give ourselves at least ten years to grow and do something different.
MrZer asks: Paula, do you have an idol?
paula_devicq_live: Yes I do. It's my mom! paula_devicq_live: My mom is the most amazing woman I've ever met. paula_devicq_live: And is just love, and has so much courage, and she is a person that has given me strength. paula_devicq_live: And she has always said to me, whatever you want to do in this life Paula, just do it.
kaitie_1999 asks: What do you like to do in your spare time??
paula_devicq_live: I like to cook! I know it sounds boring but...I like to spend time in New York. paula_devicq_live: Go for walks in Central Park, go to my dance class, play with my cats...I'm pretty normal. paula_devicq_live: Every once in a while I blow the stereo and sing, but I'm a really bad singer.
sgtniki asks: I would love for you to do a spot on Ally McBeal
paula_devicq_live: Oh, it would be so fun! I have no idea what I would do but it's such a great show and the characters are all so apt. And the storylines enable the characters to be serious and funny, and to be able to use every facet of their being. paula_devicq_live: And that interests me, because you can be one thing and then another. That's what interests me as a human being and as an actor. paula_devicq_live: You have so many facets to your personality. People sometimes only see one thing, yet there is so much more there.
paula_devicq_live: On that show, you are able to see drama, vulnerability, you are able to see complete, like, they don't care, they throw caution to the wind. paula_devicq_live: And I love that combination of both of those things. Because as human beings, we're not just one thing, we're a bunch of stuff. And you really get to see that on that show, their denial side, vulnerable side, funny side, you get to see all sides.
emma_the_butterfly asks: What was the best part of being on party of five?
paula_devicq_live: Oh Gosh! There are so many things, I can't even...the only thing I can say is that it has been the most growing experience of my life. paula_devicq_live: I still don't know what it means. I just know that it will be one of the best times of my life. paula_devicq_live: PO5 is like my baby.
po5psycho asks: Paula, just saw the episode. One word: wow. I was in tears throughout the whole episode. You all did a wonderful job tonight as well as these past six years. This show will be missed. It already is.
